Fish “Tales” from the first Mate:
Being part of the Playin’ Hooky team is so much fun! We meet some amazing people celebrating various stages in their lives. We’ve had multiple honeymooners, but no story sticks out quite like Greg and Lynn from New York. They’ve been together for a very long time and because of a handicapped child they never took a honeymoon! They finally got the opportunity to take a long weekend and the only thing on their agenda for their honeymoon was Playin’ Hooky Charters. We were worried that getting them out would be difficult because during that time of the year we often have storm fronts that make it difficult to get out on the water, but we had a game plan to give them the best day on the water we possibly could. Because we knew this was a very special event for them, we blocked the whole day to give them the full experience.
We couldn’t get out early this day because of the wind that was pushing rollers from the west so we started a little later this day. Typically fishing is not the greatest mid day, so we took them to Shell Key Preserve to do some snorkeling. We left them to enjoy the surroundings and the captain and I went up the beach to catch some White bait. They enjoyed looking at all of the shells that you can find on this beach.
Then it was off to try to do some fishing, the waves had settled since the winds had shifted to an East wind making it almost glass calm.
We could see massive schools of bait cresting the surface of the gulf and put them on sabiki lines to catch bait. Sardines and threadfin is what we were after and we loaded up on them. Then it was time to head out to our spot about 11 miles off shore. Fish after fish we were pulling it and then all of the sudden the shark pole bent in half, then the kingfish line zinged. We had a double hook up. Greg grabbed the shark pole while Lynn grabbed the kingfish pole. It was now a battle to see who could reel in their catch first and what they had both caught. Greg got his beast to the surface to see a 7 foot Nurse Shark, no way we were pulling that on board, but oh what fun to fight. (While this was a legal shark to keep, we highly encourage our clients to catch and release them. However, if they actually want to eat them and it is legal, we will bring them on board.) Then Lynn brings in an Atlantic Sharpnose! They had caught 2 shark earlier in the trip, but it was exciting to have a double shark hook up! After they caught the shark, they had decided they were done fishing and only one more thing could make their trip perfect. Lynn wanted to see a dolphin. We often see dolphins while in route to and from the dock, but on this day the dolphins were a little shy. So the captain decided to take a little detour along the channels of Terra Verde to see if we could find Lynn her dolphin and sure enough, one swam right up next to the boat, making it their perfect trip!
