Fish “Tales” from the first mate:
Every family who joins us on a charter is unique and has its own energy! Some families join us for a day on the water just to enjoy the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and some just want to fish. During the peak of our Spring break business, we received a request for a set of grandparents who wanted to take their five year old grandson out for a day of fishing. Typically, a five year old loves to catch bait, catch a fish or two fish, and then they are either playing with the fish in the live well or playing on some sort of modern day video game.
Not Trevone, this little guy is truly an angler at heart. He loved catching the bait and never stopped fishing the whole trip. From the minute we made our first stop until we left for the dock, he handled a pole the whole time. He earned the title of “Snapper king” because he put more snapper in the fish cooler than anyone else on the boat and most of our charters. At one point during the trip I, first mate Tara, was talking to grandma when Tre said “I think I have a fish!” I turn to look at him holding on to the pole bent in half and almost half way in the water; he wasn’t letting the pole go! Sure enough that little guy reeled in a 19” Red Grouper!
Towards the end of the trip Captain hooked a Kingfish and handed the pole to grandpa. Tre wanted to reel in that big fish too and we had to explain to him that it would have taken him into the water; it turned out to be a smoker king mackerel measuring 45” fork length! After talking to the grandparents we learned that Tre enjoys freshwater fishing and ice fishing as well! It’s truly important to get your future anglers started as early as possible! Leave the electronics at home and get caught Playin’ hooky!
